RGSC, Eco1 & Me. . . .

The Second campus of BHU situated at Barkachha, Mirzapur district in UP. Our campus is basically a table land which is being used to do research work in agriculture. It was established by BHU with the vision of making an agriculture institution for helping the society with their work, expertise and knowledge, a symbiotic relationship between the farmers of Mirzapur and the scientific think-thanks. An exchange of scientific knowledge and age-old experiences regarding farming is nurtured in this campus.
Although agriculture is the main priority here, RGSC has got so many other departments running, which includes BNYS, Mass. comm., Pharmacy, B.Com. etc which also includes our M.Sc. (Tech) in environmental science and technology. This campus is a world in its own and being a student of environmental science this campus is a paradise for me since it is situated in the foothills of vindhya mountain range the intermingling or coherence of nature with human civilization is very inspiring. Our campus and nature grows simultaneous, side by side.
The terrain of Barkachha is rocky and uneven so most of the vegetation is wild. Mirzapur is also a great tourist spot which has got as many as six falls, in very near vicinity which are uniquely beautiful in themselves scenic beauty in each of this places is enthralling  which fills our heart with immense joy and pleasure in every season. Our campus is too, full of scenic beauty which resembles a gurukul.
At first, farming this place was not possible due to its rocky terrain and soil structure but now due to BHU’s initiative we have got six hundred acres of farm land which facilitates in research works for agricultural and biotechnological purposes and all of its credit goes to an excellent watershed management system of Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, BHU.
Now there are few issues in this campus which needs to addressed for example:-
   1. Afforestation to be done for more cleanliness and beautification. For this purpose the ideal example can be the BHU main campus situated in Varanasi.
    2. Proper waste management should be done, most importantly which includes installing USE ME’s dustbins and proper dumping sites.
    3. Since RGSC is a system in itself, practices to produce bio fertilizers can be made from biodegradable waste that are released from the hostel , admin building, health centre, and lecture theatre. The non-biodegradable waste can be accumulated and sent to organisations which works on recycling of wastes (plastic bags and other plastic products).
   4. Awareness in people regarding disposal of waste, resourceful use of water and developing an eco-friendly attitude in all students, faculties, officials and workers who are associated with this campus.
  5. Finally removal of high tension wires and providing transportation facilities(e.g cycles) to students should be done immediately.
These are a few points which according to me, if implemented can make this campus an example in itself for whole of India.

Eco1: The Gardener of RGSC

In the city of natural beauty “Mirzapur”, RGSC is located just 10 Km away from the divine pure Ganges river. RGSC is growing like a baby day by day in the lap of the mother earth by making the use of every natural resource in a sustainable manner either we talk of the afforestation done after the deforestation for making buildings, or the proper utilization of the water for various purposes like daily need, agriculture etc.
Not just the train stops here, RGSC has grown much more plants than uprooted for constructions, the very scenic beauty of the nature can be seen here in terms of flora and fauna still jackals and neel-guy can be seen which are slowly – slowly been shifting to their natural habitat with the help of the Forest department.
Paradise in RGSC
Eco1 an active environment club is basically working to maintain the natural beauty of place along with the development of the campus, its main aim is sustainable development. Polythene carry bags are totally ban in the campus (which is non-recyclable material) with the effort of Eco1. The Eco1 is founded by Debadityo Sinha an active environmentalist with the vision of making this campus a “zero waste campus”. Dustbins are put alongside the roads in order to make the campus look clean. Various charts regarding environment protection can be seen in the campus. Seminars also being organized time to time to educate and aware the students about the very cause of environment.
As such 2013 is named as “water conservation year” by the Prime minister of India and “International year of cooperation” by United Nation. Keeping this in mind Eco1 celebrated world wetland day by organizing a cleanliness drive in the Windham Fall area which is being a hotspot for the tourism is polluted by the tourists harshly and no one is still thinking of it even the government bodies are still on the bed and eyes closed. It is a said proverb “Act like a mirror” it is also true in all time of life then why we are running from it when it comes to the environment if nature is giving us a pure and valuable  environment to live and to sustain life then why are we destroying  nature why ???

SHINING OF WINDHAM FALL ON WETLAND DAY BY ECO1

The world wetland day is being celebrated on 2nd February every year.It marks the date of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands, called Ramsar Convention, on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea .World Wetland Day was celebrated for the first time in 1997 and made an encouraging beginning. The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat, or Ramsar Convention, is an international treaty designed to address global concerns regarding wetland loss and degradation. The primary purposes of the treaty are to list wetlands of international importance and to promote their wise use, with the ultimate goal of preserving the world's wetlands. The theme of this wetland day was "wetlands take care of water". A wetland is a land area that is saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally Wetlands consist primarily of hydric soil, which supports aquatic plants. The water found in wetlands can be saltwater, freshwater, or brackish. Main wetland types include swamps, marshes, bogs and fens.Wetlands play a number of roles in the environment, principally water purification, flood control, and shoreline stability.Wetlands are the most biologically diverse among all ecosystems.Wetlands are present naturally (except Antarctica) and may be constructed artificially. Amazon .River basin and the West Siberian Plain is the largest wetlands in the world.Wetland systems naturally produce an array of vegetation and other ecological products that can harvested for personal and commercial use. Wetlands are vital ecosystems that provide livelihoods for the millions of people who live in and around them .Wetlands have historically been the victim of large draining efforts for real estate development, or flooding for use as recreational lakes .To celebrate the wetland day,the Eco1 club, running in the south campus of Banaras Hindu University organized a cleaning campaign at Windham fall near south campus,BHU.In this cleaning campaign,a large number of student of all courses has participated and went to the  Windham fall by university bus and collected the plastics and other wastes which has been thrown by the tourist and other local people near the fall. Along with the students, the security persons of the university and faculty members went to the Windham fall and cooperated the student in this cleaning campaign. This movement was appreciated by D.N Singh-Sub Divisional Forest Officer,Mirzapur,India and said that this type of movement is a great step in the near future and to start the 'CAMPA' like association by  forest department, according to which the people are made aware about the environmental safety. This movement was also uplifted by the Superintendent of Police and Circle Officer of Mirzapur and said that the people coming to the picnic spot are suffering from BATI CHOKHA Syndrome which means that people usually come to these places for cooking and eating bati chokha and make the area polluted by their activities. He appreciated the member of the Eco1 club to organize such type of social activity. This movement was coordinated by the lecturers of M.Sc(Tech-) Environmental Science & Technology, Dr.Anil Kumar Pandey & Mr. Vijay Krishna. The sole purpose of  Eco1 is to make wetlands and their biodiversity There are a large number of nature lovers in the world  but most of them visit the wetlands to watch the natural beauty present around the wetland and make them as a picnic spot. They are apparently unaware of the variety of insects, plants and amphibians that can also be found here.Instead, the tourist visiting to the wetland area are polluting the beauty given by the nature as wetland. The Eco1 is an attempt to popularize this fact.

Celebration of 1st anniversary of Eco1 on 26th jan 2013 at RGSC-BHU....

It is the great pleasure for Eco1 that on the eve of 64th Republic day, our 1st anniversary has been celebrated at RGSC-BHU. On this great day, all the member of Eco1 worked in a coordinated way and made dustbin theirselves and put them on different places in the campus so that the wastes generated through sweet containing polythene, wrapper and other biodegradable wastes can be collected in the dustbin. By the help of self made dustbin, it will be possible to keep the campus clean and polythene free. The work done by members of Eco1 for collecting waste has been appreciated by the faculty members. The positive effect of keeping dustbin has been seen frequently. The student were keeping their wrappers of sweets in the kept dustbin near the administrative building of RGSC. Now it is very polite request from the member of Eco1 to all teaching & non-teaching staff and student of this campus to use the dustbin for maintaining the greenery of campus.
